Urethral Bulking for Stress Urinary Incontinence

Laugh, move and live with more confidence, discover a minimally invasive treatment option designed to help reduce bladder leakage and improve continence for women living with SUI. Speak with a specialist to learn whether urethral bulking may be a suitable treatment option for you.

What are urethral bulking agents?

Urethral Bulking Agent, which your doctor might refer to as UBAs are a minimally invasive, long-lasting treatment option for women with stress urinary incontinence.18  Stress incontinence occurs when urine leaks during daily activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising. Urethral bulking aims to improve closure of the urethra to reduce leakage during physical movement.

Urethral bulking agents are injectable materials placed into the wall of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. The injections add volume to the urethral lining, which may provide greater support to help the urethra close during increases in abdominal pressure.

How does the procedure work?

Many women opt for urethral bulking as a treatment for their SUI because the procedure is minimally invasive. The procedure consists of 3-4 injections into the wall of the urethra, which maintains volume over time.

Typically, this procedure is performed in approximately 10-15 minutes under light sedation. There is a short recovery time along with less risk of serious complications.17 In one study, 56 of 67 women reported that they were able to resume normal daily activities within 24 hours.19

A specialist assessment is required to determine whether this procedure may be suitable for your symptoms.
