Sudden and overwhelming urges to urinate?

Frequent bathroom trips and sudden urges to urinate can be frustrating and disruptive. Learn more about the symptoms, causes, and types of bladder urgency that can affect everyday life.

Do you experience a sudden, overwhelming urge to urinate and struggle to reach the toilet in time?

Urge incontinence occurs when bladder control is lost, leading to involuntary leakage of urine. This condition is typically marked by a sudden, overwhelming need to urinate, which may happen so quickly that you cannot reach the toilet in time. Some people also experience a frequent urge to urinate during the day or night.

Urge incontinence is a common condition occurring with age. Urge incontinence may be associated with disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and stroke, as these illnesses may impact nerves and contribute to urge incontinence.8,9 Neurological conditions may affect the communication between the bladder and brain, leading to urgency and leakage symptoms.8,9

Are you experiencing symptoms of urge incontinence?

Urge incontinence is often associated with overactive bladder (OAB), a common condition where the bladder muscles contract too frequently or at the wrong time. Some people may experience occasional symptoms, while others may find bladder urgency begins to interfere with daily routines, sleep, exercise, travel, or social activities.

Symptoms of urge incontinence may include:

  • A sudden or intense urge to urinate
  • Leakage on the way to the bathroom
  • Frequent urination throughout the day
  • Waking during the night to urinate
  • Feeling unable to delay or control the urge to urinate
  • Avoiding outings or activities due to concern about finding a bathroom quickly

While symptoms can feel frustrating or unpredictable, there are many treatment options available that may help improve bladder control and quality of life.
